The Kanban Method is not a process replacing what you do now. It is a management method applied to your current process, and it will give you a better understanding of your work as a system. It will help you optimize for better customer outcomes using the staff and the budget that you have now. Finally, it will help you improve and adjust as conditions (and customer needs) change.

STEPS TO AN EFFECTIVE KANBAN SYSTEM

1. Observe the way you work now.

2. Create a model that mirrors your system of work: the workflow, the work items, and the policies. This is a Kanban system.

3. Use the Kanban system to help:

  • communicate current status and current needs
  • get everyone coordinated and collaborating
  • optimize how work flows in, out, and through the system
  • measure and adjust to keep up with shifting conditions

In addition to delivering better performance, the Kanban system is a powerful risk management tool. It makes decisions easier and clearer. It lightens the load on parts of the system that are overburdened. It limits interruptions, other sources of delay, and non-essential work.

Once you have a basic Kanban system functioning correctly, there are classes and materials to learn how to manage and improve it over time.  Soon your basic Kanban system will be a full fledged risk management system.
